Getting comfortable can be one of the biggest challenges during lower-body recovery. Proper positioning, support, and rest may help reduce discomfort and promote a more restful night's sleep.
1. Elevate the Injured Leg: Help reduce swelling
Many patients find that elevating the leg on pillows helps improve comfort, especially during the early stages of recovery.
2. Support the Entire Leg: Use pillows strategically
Place pillows under the calf and ankle to provide support and help maintain a comfortable position while resting.
3. Sleep on Your Back When Possible: Keep the leg protected
Sleeping on your back often helps prevent accidental pressure on a cast, brace, or walking boot during the night.
4. Protect Your Recovery Device: Avoid twisting or awkward positions
Try to keep casts, braces, and walking boots properly aligned and supported while sleeping.
5. Follow Provider Instructions: Wear devices as directed
If your provider recommends sleeping in a brace or walking boot, follow their instructions to help protect the healing area.
Every recovery is different.
Contact your orthopedic provider if pain, swelling, numbness, tingling, or discomfort worsens while resting.
